How to fit replacement suitcase wheels

A cracked wheel is the commonest way a working suitcase becomes scrap. On most of our hard shell ranges the wheels come off and go back on by hand, so a broken wheel costs a few pounds instead of a new case.

How to tell whether your wheels detach

Look at the wheel housing from underneath. If you can see a small sprung clip or a pair of clips either side of the axle, the wheel is designed to be removed. If the housing is a smooth, closed moulding with no clip, the wheels are fixed and cannot be swapped.

Removing a wheel

1. Stand the case on its side so the wheel is clear of the floor.
2. Press the clip in the centre of the wheel hub, or squeeze both clips together.
3. Pull the wheel straight out, away from the case. It should come free without force.

Fitting the new one

1. Line the new wheel up square with the axle housing.
2. Push it straight in until you hear it click.
3. Spin it. It should turn freely and sit flush. If it wobbles, it is not fully seated: pull it out and push it in again squarely.
